Words of Honor

There are six things the Lord hates—no, seven things he detests: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that kill the innocent, a heart that plots evil, feet that race to do wrong, a false witness who pours out lies, a person who sows discord in a family. Proverbs 6:16-19

As I thought about these verses yesterday, I came up with these sayings:

You can dress up a lie with flowery words and the allusion of honey, but in the end, it is still a lie.

False accusations will eventually bring sorrow to those who speak them.

A smooth lie wounds deeper than a harsh truth.

A vicious tongue cuts deeper than a sword by dividing relationships.

Controlling what comes out of our mouths is essential to peace in every facet of our lives.

Once a person becomes used to lying, they become immune to understanding truth.

If you claim to show love, but cannot control your tongue, the only person continually fooled is yourself.

A salty ocean cannot produce pure sweet water.

Pleasant words and a bitter heart are in conflict with each other. They produce dissension and division.

Those who pretend to be your friend and gossip behind your back are not your ally.

If you want to put out a fire, don’t give air to a spark of rumors.

When you listen to rumors, you are as guilty as the one who gossiped and when you repeat the gossip, you are embellishing hearsay. You start with a domino effect and create an avalanche of trouble.

Prayer: Lord help me to control what comes out of my mouth and may all my words be a blessing to you. May I glorify God as I journey through this life. Allow the Holy Spirit to say words that are worthy of your honor and in a timely manner.

So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves. The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions. But when you are directed by the Spirit, you are not under obligation to the law of Moses. When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God.  But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things! Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there. Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives. Galatians 5:16-25

Harvest and Canning

This is a deviation from my usual blog, but I wanted to share one of my passions, which is cooking. I usually post recipes and photos on Facebook, but I’ve decided to post a blog today. I’m working on being the Proverbs 31 woman!

Then God said, “Look! I have given you every seed-bearing plant throughout the earth and all the fruit trees for your food. Genesis 1:28

While my husband was unemployed, we planted a garden which has been a great help to us as we get back on our feet financially. The garden has struggled in the last month in the exorbitant heat, but we have still been getting a bounty! Yes, we do share with those in need and family.

Yesterday, I canned a few quarts of salsa and wanted to share the process. Here is a picture of 2 quarts: This recipe should yield 4 quarts or 8 pints.

Kimberly’s Garden Fresh Salsa:

Ingredients:

16 Cups peeled, drained & chopped fresh tomatoes (I used more than one variety.)

2 medium bell peppers, red or green, diced*

6 fresh medium-sized jalapeños, minced*

4 medium sweet onion – (Vidalia or Walla Walla), diced*

6 cloves garlic, pressed* or minced*

1/2 Cup fresh cilantro OR 4 Tablespoons dried

2 Tablespoons Lemon Pepper, preferably without salt

1 Tablespoon Kosher salt

2 teaspoons ground Cumin

1 Cup freshly squeezed lime juice, (Key lime is best) OR 1/2 Cup lime juice Plus 2/3 Cup Cider Vinegar

4 dried red chili peppers, seeded and cut up finely (1/8 inch) with Kitchen shears

Instructions:

1. Cut an ‘x’ in the bottom of tomatoes and submerge in almost boiling water for 30 – 60 Seconds. Dip out with a slotted spoon and place them on a towel or cutting board to dry. (Don’t leave them in the hot water too long or they will be mushy to work with and absorb water.)

2. Peel and core tomatoes. (If using grape tomatoes, peel back & cut the end off to core, as demonstrated in the first photo below. Once they are cored, chop peeled tomatoes into 1/2 inch chunks, removing any leftover core. I don’t totally seed my tomatoes because I don’t want to lose the gel, but I do remove any bad spots and some of the gel & seeds. There is quite a bit of flavor in the gel!

3. Place tomatoes in a colander over a larger bowl to drain while you chop up your other ingredients. Allow at least an hour for the juices to drain & then save the juice for another recipe. As you can see from the bottom photo below, I had about 2 – 4 Cups of juice; so start with approximately 18 to 20 Cups of tomatoes to yield 16 Cups.

4. Now you are ready to chop up the bell peppers, jalapeños, onions, garlic, cilantro, and dried chili peppers (cilantro & chili peppers not pictured).

5. Juice limes to yield 1 Cup of lime juice (without pulp) or 1/2 Cup of lime juice if you are using vinegar as well. (I strain mine with a sieve to remove any small seeds or pulp.) I used my juicer that attaches to a measuring cup, but I’ve put a handheld juicer/reamer on my ‘wish list’ for new kitchen gadgets! (Key limes are small & hard to juice, but the flavor is not easily matched!)

6. Measure lemon pepper, Kosher salt, and ground Cumin, set aside. (This photo also has dried cilantro in the ramekin because I was out of fresh due to the heat.)

7. Now dump all the ingredients into a large saucepan and stir to combine. I use a 10 quart saucepan. Once it is simmering, simmer for at least 15 minutes or until desired thickness.

8. Once the salsa has finished simmering, place hot salsa into sterilized* canning jars, with a ladle and a funnel – All sterilized*. Remove any air pockets with a  sterilized canning bubble remover. Leave a half-inch space at top of jar.

9. Wipe off any residue from rim of jar with a clean towel moistened with hot water. Place a new lid, which has been sterilized*, on each jar and place rims over lids. Hand tighten rims.

10. Place jars into a boiling water bath for 15 minutes. You may check canning guides online for different altitudes.

11. Remove from water bath with canning tongs and allow to cool on a towel or a rack with a towel underneath.

Be sure to check and make sure lids are sealed once they have cooled. If the lids pop when pressed in the center, they are not sealed. If any are not sealed, you may refrigerate and still use. Do not use less lime juice or vinegar, the acid is essential for preservation! Enjoy!

(When my husband is my sous chef, he asks me the difference b/w minced, diced, and chopped finely, coarsely, etc. I have provided a key to the terms below.)

*Key to terms: Minced is about as small as you can get when chopping, about an 1/8 of an inch in size. Diced is a bit larger – about 1/4 inch in size. Chopped finely is comparable to diced. Chopped alone would be approximately 1/2 inch in size, unless otherwise noted. Pressed is put into a garlic press & squeezed out, minced is almost the same & will do for garlic. Sterilization is key in canning. You should boil all of your equipment; lids, rims, tongs, lid magnet, in a saucepan to sterilize before using. Boil 10 minutes at altitudes of less than 1,000 ft. At higher elevations, boil 1 additional minute for each additional 1,000 ft. elevation. For the jars, you can sterilize in a dishwasher with very hot water and dry with the heat, not air dry. Leave in dishwasher until ready to use. I usually run my jars through a complete cycle before I start preparing my recipe. (Some dishwashers have a sterilization cycle, which you can use.)

Praise God for his provision!

“You take care of the earth and water it,
    making it rich and fertile.
The river of God has plenty of water;
it provides a bountiful harvest of grain,
for you have ordered it so.
You drench the plowed ground with rain,
melting the clods and leveling the ridges.
You soften the earth with showers
    and bless its abundant crops.
You crown the year with a bountiful harvest;
even the hard pathways overflow with abundance.” Psalm 65:9-11

The Abyss

Abyss – n. (uh-bis) 1. a deep, immeasurable chasm; a hollow pit.  2. unending profound knowledge, enlightenment or understanding that keeps growing; endless, unfathomable, infinite.

Deep calls unto deep. “I hear the tumult of the raging seas as your waves and surging tides sweep over me. But each day the Lord pours his unfailing love upon me, and through each night I sing his songs; praying to God who gives me life.” Psalm 42:7-8 (NLT)

These two verses have captured my attention this week. When my husband & I married, we knew that we would be more effective together than we were apart. We know that God is going to use us as a team to calm the storms, so to speak, in the lives of others. We are seeking him daily as we follow his path for our lives.

We have been through quite a bit in our first ten months of marriage. When we married, he was the associate pastor of a church where he had been for nine years and an administrator of a small private school. Only six short months into our marriage, due to unforeseen circumstances, the church and the school closed. It was not a total surprise, but it was an adjustment for him to go from full-time ministry and seek a position back in ‘the world.’ This doesn’t mean that our ministry is over, it has just been changed, redirected, and there are opportunities every day, if we see them. When we stop seeing our lives as a ministry, we have lost faith in God. I pray that never happens. There is always room to grow, develop, and learn more of God.

Sometimes when we face changes in our lives, it can seem like we are facing an abyss, a deep chasm. When we focus on the change and not the solution, we may become overwhelmed. It is in times like these, that we must step back, from our natural tendencies, and seek what God has in store for us. Every day is an opportunity to learn and grow, no matter what we are facing. When we grow or increase, God increases. We are the harbingers (messengers) of God, if we are following him. I hope that we reflect all that is good and loving, or we have missed the mark.

I would like to break these verses down into what I was seeing as I studied and reflected on them. There is so much beneath the surface; there are parallels, and insights if we only dig. An immediate & simple interpretation of the verses tell me that God is near us when the seas rage and wash over us, that in his unfailing love, he will pull us through. That is an awesome thought process by itself but I knew just from the first phrase, there was so much more to these verses. In the KJV, the phrase is ‘Deep calleth unto deep…’

In summary, I will explain in my own words what this passage means to me now:

“To obtain immeasurable knowledge, we must seek from an unfathomable source, and hear the Voice who calls to each of us. That source is God. The voice is springing forth from all who are a conduit of the Living Water. All the storms and trials will pass over me, not necessarily unscathed, but safe, covered protectively when I am following and looking to him as my sustenance, because he made a new covenant with me when the stone was rolled away. He finished it and sealed it with his death, burial, and resurrection. He has now passed the mantle to carry on the work he set forth. The Lord, the eternal one, the creator of the universe will enable me as a messenger to share His favor, mercy, and unchanging Love to all who will hear. As I am spreading his message, he will lavish me with His faithful love in the form of a protective cloud and a mighty pillar of fire which doesn’t go out in the darkest hours. His provision will allow me to provide for others through His abundance. He will give me His songs in great number, the songs of praise and thanksgiving with wisdom from an Almighty God, who is forever present throughout my life, like a springing well full of fresh and flowing water.”

Prayer: Lord, help my abyss to be one of seeking your wisdom and knowledge for my life and not one of emptiness. Help me to share from your unending supply of living water. Help others to be drawn to your well deposited in me that their thirst might be quenched. Thank you for your unfailing love which carries me daily. Amen!

(Feel free to read the footnotes of my study below. The notes on these verses were brought together by using the Hebrew words and their meanings. In some footnotes, I have also included scriptures which use the same meaning of the word.)

Psalm 42:7-8 “Deep[1] calleth unto deep at the noise[2] of thy waterspouts[3]: all thy waves[4] and thy billows[5] are gone over[6] me. Yet the Lord[7] will command[8] his lovingkindness[9] in the daytime[10], and in the night[11] his song[12] shall be with me, and my prayer[13] unto the God[14] of my life[15].”

[1] Deep = Hebrew – tehom: an abyss (something immeasurable or unfathomable); subterranean water, which comes from rock & is usually in the form of natural springs.

[2] Noise = H – qowl: voice, to call aloud (in the Garden of Eden, Adam & Eve heard ‘the voice’ walking Genesis 3:18); a trumpet sound “Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me.” Isaiah 6:8 “Thou shalt be visited of the Lord of hosts with thunder, and with earthquake, and great noise, with storm and tempest, and the flame of devouring fire.” Isaiah 29:6

[3] Waterspouts = H – Tsinnuwr – water conduit; hollow culvert – we are hollow without Jesus, he replaces our emptiness with his water

[4] Waves = H – mishbar – breakers, billow, waves; Jonah 2:3 “For thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about: all thy billows and thy waves passed over me.” (waves of death)

[5] Billows = H – gal – something rolled (stone at the tomb); heap of stones over a dead body or used to confirm a covenant (Genesis 31:48, Joshua 8:29 [king on a tree]; to do away with; spring Song of Songs 4:12

And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me.”; Esther 8:3 King Xerxes passed the mantle to Mordecai, to put away Haman’s evil which had been associated with his rule & passed it over to one who was worthy of leadership – Mordecai; Esther 9 Feast of Purim was to pass over from sorrow into joy

[7] Lord = H – YHVH Yahweh– eternal, unchanging, the existence of all life is derived from Him, the breath of life, the creator of the universe; His name was so revered under the old covenant that only the high priest uttered the name; a name so encompassing that it is difficult to interpret adequately.

[8] command = H – tsavah – send a messenger to carry out; to appoint; to ordain; to command Genesis 42:25 Joseph commanded to fill their sacks

[9] lovingkindness = H – checed – favor; devotion; loyalty; mercy; unchanging love. Isaiah 54:10 ““For the mountains may move and the hills disappear, but even then my faithful love for you will remain. My covenant of blessing will never be broken,” says the Lord, who has mercy on you.”

[14] God = H – Almighty God, Immanuel, God with us.

[15] life = H – chay – living, flowing fresh water; life giving

Deep calleth unto deep at the noise of thy waterspouts, all thy waves and thy billows are gone over me. Yet the Lord will command his lovingkindness in the daytime, and in the night his song shall be with me, and my prayer unto the God of my life. Psalm 42:7-8
